Etymology
Various theories:
- From a Northern dialect 咸不剌 in Beijing during the Yuan dynasty.[1][2]
- From a Hmong language /banɡlanɡ/.[3]
- Of Cantonese origin, 冚 + duplicated intensifier form of 朋 (classifier),[4] compare 雜崩冷/杂崩冷 (zaap6 bang1 lang1).
- From Chinese Pidgin English hampalang, from Cantonese 咸埋包來[5] or English home balance (“grand total”).[6]
