From Old Khmer ជេង៑ (jeṅ), ជេង (jeṅa), ជើង (jœṅa, north; lower limb; leg; foot; bottom; edge; base; basis; stand; support; etc), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟuŋ ~ *ɟuəŋ ~ *ɟəŋ (leg, foot). Cognate with Bahnar jơ̆ng, Mon ဇိုၚ်, Vietnamese chân, and Thai เชิง (chəəng). Munda cognates include Santali ᱡᱟᱝᱜᱟ (jaṅga).
