Khmer
Etymology
From Proto-Mon-Khmer. Cognate with Temne ked (“pregnant; to cause, to bring about”), Khmu [Cuang] kəːt, Halang kòt (“be born, be pregnant”).
The sense "east" was probably originally "the place where the sun rises" or "where the sun was born"; compare Thai ตะวันออก (dtà-wan-ɔ̀ɔk, “east”), Temne kedʔis (“east, "birth of the day"”), Khasi mih'ngi (“east, [where] the sun rises”).
