Etymology

From Old Georgian ჯოხი (ǯoxi, staff). Related to synonymous Old Armenian ջոխ (ǰox), possibly also to Karabakh Armenian ճախ (čax), ճեխ (čex, brushwood, dry twigs for fire). The nature of relationship and the ultimate origin are unknown.
