Etymology

From Old Georgian ოფოფი (opopi), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *opop- (hoopoe). Compare Mingrelian ოფოფი (opopi) and Laz ოფამფე (opampe). Likely of onomatopeic origin, but compare also similar words in some Indo-European languages, such as Old Armenian յոպոպ (yopop), Latin upupa, Ancient Greek ἔποψ (épops), Latvian pupuķis, and Persian پوپو (pôpô).
