Etymology

Origin is uncertain. According to some sources, related to ზანავი (zanavi) (a common Georgian toponym), arguing the fact that the root *ზან- (*zan-) is present in multiple Georgian hydronyms.

On the other hand, compare Hinukh гӏалазан (a̯alazan), олозен (olozen, lake), Bezhta алазан (alazan, lake) and Tsez гӏалза́н (a̯alzán), гӏалазан (a̯alazan, lake).
