From Pali abhipāla (protector), from abhi (over; upon; etc) + pāla (guardian; keeper; custodian; etc), or from Sanskrit अभिपाल (abhipāla, idem), अभि (abhi, idem) + पाल (pāla, idem), equivalent to Thai อภิ (à-pí) + บาล (baan). Cognate with Khmer អភិបាល (ʼaʼphibaal).
