From Sanskrit धर्म (dharma, that which upholds or supports). Compare Pali dhamma, from which Thai ธัมมะ and its alternative forms are derived. Cognate with Old Khmer dharma, dhārmma, dharmma; Modern Khmer ធម៌ (thɔə), ធម្ម (thŏəm).
