Possibly from Khmer តង្កៀប (tɑngkiəp, “pliers; tongs”)[1] or Mon သ္ကေပ်.[1] Compare another Khmer ថ្កៀប (thkiəp), Lao ຕະຂຽບ (ta khīap), Lü ᦑᦰᦵᦆᧇ (t!xeb), Hlai tiep.
