From Proto-Tai *ɟaŋᴬ (“to hate”), from Middle Chinese 憎 (MC tsong). Cognate with Isan ซัง, Lao ຊັງ (sang), Northern Thai ᨩᩢ᩠ᨦ, Lü ᦋᧂ (tsang), Tai Dam ꪋꪰꪉ, Shan ၸင်း (tsáng), Zhuang caengz.
