Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀇𑀬 (maïya), from Sanskrit মতিয (matiya), মত্য (matya, “club with iron points”). Cognate with Bengali মই (moi, “harrow, ladder”), Odia ମଇ (môi), Hindustani مئی / मई (maī).
