Inherited from Sanskrit कवयी (kavayī), a compound of (ka, water) + वय् (vay, to go) + -ई (, nominal suffix), literally meaning "the one who goes through water";[1] the second element is ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weyh₁- (to chase).
