From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáwtā (priest), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéw-tōr (pourer), from *ǵʰew- (to pour). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬊𐬙𐬀𐬭 (zaotar) and English god.
