Etymology 1

Inherited from Prakrit हीरग (hīraga), from Sanskrit हीरक (hīraka).[1][2] Doublet of हीर (hīr) and हीरक (hīrak). Cognate with Punjabi ਹੀਰਾ (hīrā) / ہِیرا (hīrā), Sindhi هيِرو / हीरो, Gujarati હીરો (hīro), Marathi हिरा (hirā), Bengali হীরা (hira), Assamese হীৰা (hira).
