Etymology
Likely from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wedH- (“to utter, to call”), and cognate with Proto-Hellenic *awéidō (“to sing”) (per Calvert Watkins), whence Ancient Greek ἀείδω (aeídō, “to chant, praise”), as well as with αὐδή (audḗ, “voice; speech”), Proto-Slavic *vaditi (whence Polish wadzić (“to encumber”)), Lithuanian vadìnti, and Hittite [script needed] (watarnahh-, “to inform, report”).
