Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hmáyẓḍʰram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hmáyždʰram, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃méyǵʰ-tro-m, from *h₃meyǵʰ- (to urinate) + *-trom (suffix denoting a tool or an instrument for an action). The Sanskrit root is मिह् (mih, to urinate).

The "ram" sense is likely from a collision and conflation with भेड्र (bheḍra, ram).
