Inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *múHtram (“excrement, urine”), from Proto-Indo-European *múHtrom (“excrement, urine, filth”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬏𐬚𐬭𐬀 (mūθra, “feces”), Proto-Germanic *muþraz (“filth”).
