Borrowed from Classical Persian پیاده (piyāda, literally “on foot”), from Middle Persian [script needed] (pdʾtk' /payādag/). Compare Gujarati પ્યાદું (pyādũ), Hindustani پیادہ (pyādh), پیادا (pyādā) / प्यादा (pyādā), Kannada ಪ್ಯಾದೆ (pyāde), Punjabi ਪਿਆਦਾ (piādā) / پیادہ (peyādh), Bengali পিয়াদা (piẏada).
