Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬈𐬱- (duuaeš-, to hate), Middle Persian byš (bēš, pain, misfortune), Ancient Greek δεινός (deinós, terrible), δείδω (deídō, I fear), δέος (déos, fear), Latin dīrus (fearful), Old Armenian երկնչիմ (erknčʻim, to fear).
