From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́áźʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáȷ́ʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰé-ǵʰeh₁-ti (to abandon, leave), from *ǵʰeh₁- (to go, walk). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬰𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌 (zazāiti), Latin hērēs, Ancient Greek χήρα (khḗra, widow), Old English gān (to go) (whence English go).
