From Proto-Indo-Aryan *gálati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gálati, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷél-e-ti, from *gʷel- (to drip, dribble, ooze, flow). Cognate with Albanian gëloj, Old High German quellan (to well up, to pour out), Old English cwylla (spring, source) (whence English quell).
