Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑀠 (*gaḍha), from Sanskrit *गृध (gṛdha, fort), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰr̥dʰás (enclosure), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰr̥dʰ-ó-s, from *gʰerdʰ- (to enclose). Cognate to Gujarati ગઢ (gaḍh), Bengali গড় (goṛ).
