From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ádʰi, derived (by conflation with Proto-Indo-European *éti (“over, across”)) from Proto-Indo-European *h₁n̥dʰí (“under, below”). Compare Old Avestan 𐬀𐬌𐬛𐬍 (aidī), Tocharian B ette (“lower, down”).
