From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (pʾtyc /⁠pādēz⁠/), from Old Persian *patidaiza, from Proto-Iranian *pati- (against) + *jimáh (winter), literally "towards winter". Compare Ossetian фӕззӕг (fæzzæg), Central Kurdish پایز (payz).[1]
