Deverbal noun of فرهیختن (farhixtan). From Middle Persian plʾhng (/frahang/, “education, knowledge; dictionary”), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *θanǰáyati; see there for further information. Compare Old Armenian հրահանգ (hrahang), an Iranian loanword.
