Proto-Iranian
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *tʰanǰʰáyati or *tanǰʰáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *tongʰ-éye-ti, from *tengʰ- (“to pull, weigh down”) + *-éyeti. *θ- is unexpected; perhaps the result of the influence of a similar word.
