From Middle Persian 𐭥𐭩𐭬𐭠𐭫 (wēmār, “sick, ill”), from Proto-Indo-European *wemh₁- (“to spew, vomit”) + ār (agent suffix). Cognate with Latin vomō (“be sick, vomit”), Northern Kurdish bîvêr.
