Possibly from Classical Persian بت (bat, “duck”), related to Sanskrit वर्तक (vartaka, “quail”). Cognate with Hindustani بطخ / बत्तख़ (battax), Punjabi ਬੱਤਕ (battak), ਬੱਤਖ਼ (battax), Gujarati બતક (batak), Sindhi بَدَڪَ (badaka) / Sindhi बदक (badaka), Marathi बदक (badak), Konkani बदक (badak), Odia ବତକ (bôtôkô).
