Synchronically connected to the root ب ص ص (b-ṣ-ṣ) or ب و ص (b-w-ṣ) meaning “to urge on”, “to hasten”, “to proceed”, “to outrun”, “a horse leading a race”; the reed being used as a crop to encourage speed.
Diachronically, from Proto-Semitic *būṣ-. Doublet of بُوصِير (būṣīr), بَزّ (bazz), بِزَّة (bizza), and بُزْيُون (buzyūn).
