Etymology
From Sogdian [script needed] (ʾʾγʾz /āγāz/), from Proto-Iranian *ā- (“ad-”) + *gaHz- (“to run, start”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ed- (“at”) + *g⁽ʷʰ⁾eh₂ģʰ- (“to wade”). Cognate with Sanskrit गाह् (gāh, “to dive into, wade”), Slovene gáziti (“to wade”).[1][2]
