Etymology

An Iranian borrowing, from an unidentified dialect differing from both Middle Persian and Parthian in showing an output -ար- (-ar-) from Proto-Iranian *r̥. Compare Middle Persian [script needed] (pwštykpʾn' /puštībān/, supporter, bodyguard), Persian پشتیبان (poštibân, prop; whatever is leant upon, trusted to), پشتیوان (poštivân, bar, prop). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *pr̥šti-pāna-. For the constituents see Proto-Iranian *pr̥štáh and -պան (-pan). Doublet of փուշտիպան (pʻuštipan). The later sense "servant" developed under the influence of պաշտեմ (paštem).[1][2]
