Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Possibly connected with Old Armenian շաղեմ (šałem, to knead), շաղախ (šałax, mortar), շողիք (šołikʻ, drool, drivel).

Noun

շաղ • (šał)

  1. drop, dew
    • 5th century, Bible, Job 38.28:[1]
      Ո՞վ է հայր անձրեւի․ և ո՞վ է որ ծնաւ զշաւղս (var. զշաւիղս, զշաղս) ցաւղոյ:
O?v ē hayr anjrewi; ew o?v ē or cnaw zšawłs (var. zšawiłs, zšałs) cʻawłoy:
      • Translation by Claude E. Cox
Who is the rain's father? And who is it that gave birth to the dew's traces?
    • 5th century, Bible, Song of Songs 5.2:[2]
Զի գլուխ իմ լի եղեւ ցաւղով եւ վարսք իմ ի շաղից (var. շուղից, շողից) գիշերւոյ:
Zi glux im li ełew cʻawłov ew varskʻ im i šałicʻ (var. šułicʻ, šołicʻ) gišerwoy:
      • Translation by New English Translation of the Septuagint
For my head is wet with dew, and my locks with drops of the night.

Usage notes

  • In Job, corresponds to Ancient Greek βῶλος (bôlos, lump, drop). Cox prefers the variant reading զ-շաւղ-ս (z-šawł-s) in that passage and explains it as the accusative plural of շաւիղ (šawił, path; trace), accordingly translating the word as "traces". But the accusative plural of շաւիղ (šawił) would be զ-շաւիղ-ս (z-šawił-s).
  • In the Song of Songs, corresponds to Ancient Greek ψεκάς (psekás, drop).
