βῶλος

Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- βόλος (bólos)
Etymology
Unknown; a candidate for Pre-Greek origin. Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *bow-lo-, from an expressive root *bew- (“to swell, bubble; round object”) (compare Latin bulla (“bubble, knob”), Proto-Germanic *pullaz (“round object”)). Compare also Ancient Greek βολβός (bolbós, “bulb”), βουνός (bounós, “hill, mound; clot”) and βουβών (boubṓn, “swelling; groin”), but according to Beekes these can hardly be related.
