Etymology

An Iranian borrowing: compare Old Persian [script needed] (framātar, master, lord), Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (plmʾtʾl /framādār/, commander, ruler, chief). For the constituents see Old Armenian հրամայեմ (hramayem), հրաման (hraman) and Persian ـدار (-dâr). The form հրամանատար (hramanatar) is either a folk-etymological reshaping of հրամատար (hramatar) as հրաման (hraman, command) + -ա- (-a-) + -տար (-tar, to carry) or is borrowed from a parallel Iranian form: compare Sogdian [Syriac needed] (frmʾndʾr /framāndār/, governor, tutor), Persian فرماندار (farmândâr, governor).
