Etymology
The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *kh₂ewl- and cognate with Ancient Greek κήλη (kḗlē, “tumour; rupture, hernia”), Proto-Germanic *haulaz (“breach, crack; rupture, hernia”), Proto-Slavic *kỳla (“outgrowth, hernia”). Alternatively, related to Russian шуло́ (šuló, “testicle”).
