Probably from Proto-Indo-European *ḱluH-r-yo- ~ *ḱluH-r-yeh₂- (light, bright, clear, clean, joyful). Cognates include Latin cluo (I clean), Welsh clir (light, bright, clear, clean, joyful), Lithuanian šlúoti (to wipe), Ancient Greek κλύζω (klúzō), Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌿𐍄𐍂𐍃 (hlūtrs, pure, clean).
