šluoti

Lithuanian

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ślṓuˀtei, further perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlewH- (to cleanse) (whence Latin cluō (to cleanse), Ancient Greek κλύζω (klúzō, to wash)). Possibly related to dialectal Proto-Slavic *slavina (valve, tap) (if not a Latin borrowing) and hydronyms *Sluja (r. Sluja), *Slovǫta (Upper Dnieper), Polish Sława.

Verb
