Etymology

From Classical Mongolian ᠥᠩᠭᠡ (öŋge), from Middle Mongol ᠥᠩᠭᠡ (öŋge), from Proto-Mongolic *öŋ-ge, from Proto-Turkic *öŋ. Within the Mongolic family, cognate with Buryat үнгэ (ünge), Kalmyk өңг (öñg), Daur unggw (color, facial expression), Dongxiang ungie (face, countenance, color), etc. For Turkic cognates, compare also Old Uyghur [script needed] (öŋ, color), Kazakh өң (öñ, face, shape, color), Yakut өҥ (öñ, color).

The lust sense is derived after Chinese ().
