Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠴᠢᠷᠠᠢ (čirai), from Middle Mongol ᠴᠢᠷᠠᠢ (ṣyrʾy /čirai/) Proto-Mongolic *čiraj with pre-breaking, compare Mongghul qirai. Outside of Mongolic, compare Yakut сирэй (sirey, “face”).
