стопанин
Bulgarian
Etymology
From an earlier стопа́н (stopán) (dialectal) + -ин (-in) (agentive suffix). Formally reflects Proto-Slavic *stopan(in)ъ which yielded Old Church Slavonic стопанъ (stopanŭ), Serbo-Croatian стопан, Macedonian стопан (stopan) and was loaned into Romanian stăpân, but beyond that - of uncertain origin.
Proposed etymologies include:
- Georgiev, Simeonov: From a Balkan substratum, akin to Albanian shtëpâ (“head shepherd; cheese-making shepherd”), shtëpi (“home”). Perhaps related to Proto-Germanic *stabaz (“staff”), Latvian stabs (“pole, post”), Old Prussian stabis (“foundation stone”), Proto-Slavic *stoborъ (“fence”) (effectively from Proto-Indo-European *stebʰ- (“to stiffen”)). Albanologists (Çabej, Huld, Orel) consider the Albanian terms loanwords from Slavic or Greek (or Latin);
- Miklošich, Barić: Possibly from a metathesis of Latin *hospitanus (“hospitable”), hospitium (“inn, lodging”);
- Mladenov: From p-extension of Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (“to stay, to stand”), akin to Lithuanian stapytis (“to stand still”), Sanskrit स्थापयति (sthāpayati, “to cause to stay or keep”). Further related to Czech statkář (“property owner”);
- Detschew: Second element from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂-no-s (“protector”), perhaps of Iranian origin. Compare the second element of Old Persian 𐎧𐏁𐏂𐎱𐎠𐎺𐎠 (x-š-ç-p-a-v-a /xšaçapāvā/, “satrap”), Sanskrit क्षत्रप (kṣatrapa).
