From Old East Slavic спѣти (spěti, to hasten, to succeed), from Proto-Slavic *spěti, from Proto-Indo-European *spewd- (press, hurry), whence English speed. Akin to Slovene speti (to hasten), Slovak dospieť (grow mature), Czech spět, spěch. Non-Slavic cognates include Sanskrit स्फायते (sphā́yatē, to grow fat, increase) and German sich sputen (to hasten).
