From Proto-Finno-Ugric *perä. Cognates include Erzya пря (pŕa), Finnish perä, Komi-Zyrian бӧр (bör), Udmurt бер (ber), Eastern Khanty пәртӓг (pərtäg), Western Mansi па̄р (pār).[1] Replaced Proto-Mordvinic *peɣə (head).
