From Proto-Mordvinic *arśəms, possibly from Proto-Finno-Ugric *arwa (price, value); compare Finnish arvo (value), arvata (to guess), Estonian aru (reason), arvama (to believe, assume, think), Hungarian ár (price). Ultimately borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hargʰás (price, worth, value), whence Sanskrit अर्घ (argha, worth, value).
