τέτραξ
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Originally onomatopoeic. For the suffix, compare the bird names κόραξ (kórax, “crow”) and πέρδιξ (pérdix, “partridge”). Similar bird names are Lithuanian tetervà (“grey hen”), Proto-Slavic *tetervь (“black grouse”), Proto-Iranian *tatr̥wáh (“pheasant”) and Sanskrit तित्तिर (tittira, “partridge”). From the same onomatopoeic root are τετράων (tetráōn), τέτριξ (tétrix), τατύρας (tatúras), τέταρος (tétaros) and τετράζω (tetrázō).
