From Ancient Greek τέρψις (térpsis), from Proto-Hellenic *térptis, from Proto-Indo-European *térp-ti-s ~ *tr̥p-téy-s (fulfillment, satisfaction, pleasure, delight). Cognate with Sanskrit तृप्ति (tṛ́pti), Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍆𐍄𐍃 (þaurfts, need) and dialectal German Durft (necessity).
