βαλανεῖον

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • βᾰλᾰνῖον (balanîon), βᾰλᾰνῆον (balanêon)

Etymology

Attempts have been made to connect with βάλανος (bálanos, acorn), but are semantically unconvincing. According to Beekes, it is Pre-Greek, while Furnée compares Old Georgian აბანოჲ (abanoy, bathroom).
