From Old Anatolian Turkish شو (şu), from شل (şol) (by analogy of bu (this)), from earlier [script needed] (uş ol), equivalent to (lo!) + o (she, he, it, that). Compare şimdi (now), işte (lo!). Cognate with Kazakh сол (sol) and Bashkir шул (şul).
