LGBT theatre (also known as gay theatre, lesbian theatre or queer theatre) is theatre that is based on the lives of gay and lesbian people and gay and lesbian culture. Some LGBT theatre is specifically about the experiences of gay men or lesbian women.[1] Collectively, LGBT theatre forms part of LGBT culture.

Famous examples of LGBT theatre include the musical Rent by Jonathan Larson and the play Bent by Martin Sherman.

LGBT theatre in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, gay elements had long existed within mainstream theatre, but gay theatre only began to emerge as an overt entity after the decriminalization of homosexuality following the Wolfenden Report.[2]

As of 2023, several venues and theatre companies dedicated wholly or partly to gay theatre exist in London, including the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, the Kings Head Theatre, and Above the Stag.[3]
