Background and Identification
The India Mark II is a hand operated pump used for deep well water pumping. This pump is common in Africa and has many variations because its design is open source. The pump can be identified by its 3 pieces modular design, base, water tank, and head assembly, and its slanted head. Many pumps will also have a small placard on the side of their head identifying their model and origin.
The design of the India Mark II is considered flawed do to the relatively short service life of some of its components and the headaches caused by needing to service these components. For example, to reach the pump/plunger mechanism all the pipe and plunger rod must be excavated. This means removing pipe sometimes in excess of 100 feet. Removing such lengths of pipe, often filled with water, requires special tools due to the immense weight.
