Don't
let the bland graphics and lack of music put you
off this game, for underneath lies one of the
simplest, most addictive games you're ever likely
to play!
|
Based
on the Qix genre of games, the basic idea is to fill
75% of the screen in blue by creating sections of blocks
while avoiding the nasty enemy balls. You can freely
move around in the blue area but as soon as you move
into the black area, a yellow trail follows you until
you touch blue again. If there are no balls in the enclosed
trail area then it's filled in... and that's pretty
much all there is to it! Each time you complete a level
(by reaching a minimum of 75% filled in blue) another
ball is added to the next level. You start off on level
one with 2 balls in the blue area and 3 balls in the
black unfilled area. On each level you can also press
the fire-button to reverse the direction of the balls,
but only a limited number of times (once on level 1,
twice on level 2 etc..).
It's relatively easy in the first few levels to fill
75% of the screen in, but the real challenge is to try
to get that elusive 99%. This is accomplished by trapping
the balls roaming around the black unfilled zone into
tiny spaces (remember an area is only filled in if there
are no balls in it). This is where the real fun lies,
and it's not as easy as it may first seem; you have
to go from under 75% to 99% in one go! You also rack
up millions of points by doing this!
Once
you start playing this game, you'll find it very difficult
to put down. It's one of those games that you can come
back to time and time again, even after months of playing,
and it has that "just one more go" element
to it! The graphics are pants but they don't need to
be anything fancy, there is no music but the sound effects
of the balls hitting the edges of the blocks is enough,
and there are no game-options but the high-score table
makes up for that!
If
you like simple games that make you think but require
quick reflexes, then Zolyx is for you. If, on the other
hand, you prefer fast-paced multi-scrolling gory shoot'em-ups
then, ahh sod it, you'll still like Zolyx! :-)
